CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Ott had decided not to rent a car at the airport because he didn’t plan to do much driving. When he needed to get somewhere he’d just take a cab, which he was doing at the moment.

On his way to the Sheraton Old San Juan the night before, Ott told the cab driver to take him past the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel. It looked like an expensive place. Ott didn’t know what Condado meant but he was certainly familiar with the name Vanderbilt. He guessed the robber baron may have detoured down to Puerto Rico for a little entrepreneurial pilferage at some point in his long and prosperous life.

Now Ott was on his way to the Policia de Puerto Rico, Santurce precinct, where he had a meeting scheduled with a homicide detective named Fabrice Del Toro.

Ott had contacted the local cop more or less out of the blue while waiting at the Miami airport for his flight. He had been bounced around from one person to another until he ended up with a man with a commanding voice who said, “Fabrice del Toro, how can I help you, sir?” Ott identified himself and told him he had a warrant for two fugitives who were murder suspects in a Palm Beach, Florida, homicide and they were registered at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel. Then he gave Del Toro their names and told him they had arrived in Old San Juan in a boat called Destiny.

“Well, I’ll be happy to assist in this matter,” Del Toro had said in a heavy Spanish accent.

Ott had thanked him for his help, said he’d be landing that night, and scheduled a meeting for mid-morning the next day.

Ott had arrived at 10:15 and they were seated in a remarkably neat and well-decorated office which seemed to have the air conditioning set right where Ott liked it: high 60s.

Ott had just filled in Del Toro on the murder and the flight of Jake Kincade and Laurie Reback, having given him only sketchy details during their brief conversation the night before.

“So, they absconded with twenty million dollars?” Del Toro asked.

Ott nodded.

“Jesus, man, that’s a lot of money.”

Ott just nodded.

“Okay, here’s what I know. Your couple was seen at the pool at the Condado a short time ago, after doing some early sightseeing,” Del Toro said. “They’re getting around on a motor scooter. I’ve also located their boat.”

Ott was surprised. Pleasantly. “How do you know all this?”

“What do you think? I’ve been sitting on my hands? After you gave me their names and said they were staying at the Condado, that was all I needed. I’ve got two men keeping an eye on them at the moment.”

Ott nodded and smiled. “I’m impressed.”

“I know what you Americans think. That we just sit around all day, take three-hour siestas in the afternoon.”

“I didn’t think anything. I just—”

“Would you like to go see their boat?” Del Toro asked.

“Sure,” Ott said, thinking there was an outside chance the couple might go there next.

Ott and Del Toro arrived at the marina and five minutes later were face to face with the Destiny.
